Remember Pride cometh before the Fall. But hey, there are different shades of pride. Pride in one''s work. Pride in being an Indian. Pride that we have in getting rid of the baggage of colonialism to build a country all our own.<br />ENVY: Neighbour''s envy, owner''s pride. A desire for others'' traits, status, abilities or situation. That can be turned into a positive virtue. Enable the individual to clamber on the ladder of success and reach out to his or her fellow beings. Begin with envy, then be envied!<br />GLUTTONY: That''s a good one. In a world of conspicuous consumption, you got to be a saint not to get trapped by the imagery of a million rainbows and their pots of gold. Buy this, get that. Let desire cloak you with its tingling magic. Ever tried Death-by-Chocolate?<br />LUST: In the thrust of the pelvis and the sashay of the batootie. On television, in the movies, in the glossies and on the ramp. In the corner coffee shop and in the smoky pub. Branded lingerie sticking out of low cut jeans and barely covered bosoms. In the T&B of the morning supplement. Lust gets people places. In the boardroom, in the office. Lust is positive for those in horizontal mode. 180 degrees can turn 90 degrees in corporate profile. Unless you are caught with your pants down.<br />ANGER: Losing your cool in anarchic traffic. Wanting to break the legs of the dishonest official. Righteous anger is a must. Otherwise, we are but wimps. How can we not get angry with the perpetuators of the temple massacre in Gujarat or the blast in Bali? Anger is a must to change a world that yields most painfully to change.<br />GREED: What''s wrong wanting to have money like Narayana Murthy or Azim Premji or Mukesh Ambani? Sure, sure, health is wealth. Avarice is nothing but the green-eyed monster in frentic mode. Begin with greed and the knocks of life can yet turn one into a social worker. What would Sudha Murty be if she didn''t have the cash to give away?<br />SLOTH: There you are slogging night and day, making others rich, and hypertension is getting your gut. The bypass is just three years away and the lovely wife has left you for somebody else. Sloth, not very desirable. But if it means taking 48 hours breaks in the madness of the rat-race, it''s time to choose sloth.<br />Take them or leave them. Toss them around or reinterpret them.
